Dr. Matthias Winkenbach, Research Associate at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, has been appointed as the new Director of the MIT Megacity Logistics Lab. Dr. Winkenbach received his Ph.D. in Logistics and his Masters in Business with specializations in Finance and Economics at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. He also studied at the NYU Leonard N. Stern School of Business in New York, at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics, as well as at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) in Montréal, Canada.
Dr. Winkenbach is an expert in multi-tier distribution network design in the context of urban logistics and last-mile delivery. His research on urban distribution network design in collaboration with the French national postal operator La Poste has been awarded with the Science Award for Supply Chain Management in 2014 by the German Logistics Association (BVL). He is also amongst the finalists for this year’s Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice. Dr. Winkenbach professional background encompasses, amongst others, working with McKinsey & Company in the United States and Germany, Volkswagen in South Africa, and Deutsche Telekom in Germany.
Dr. Edgar Blanco, Founder & former Director of the Lab has recently joined Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. as Senior Director of Strategy Innovation. His role at Wal-Mart will be to build on his pioneering work at the MIT Megacity Logistics Lab and to apply and test new strategies in urban logistics and last-mile distribution at the world’s largest retailer. Dr. Blanco will continue supporting the Lab as an external advisor.
